Humira: Navigating Savings Options

For many patients, Humira is a crucial medication for managing autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and psoriasis. But its high cost can be overwhelming. At NeedyMeds, we hear from people every day who are struggling to afford Humira, so we understand the challenges firsthand.

With a list price of over $7,000 per month, it’s easy to see why so many patients feel stuck. But what many people don’t realize is that there are programs available to help with the cost of Humira. The problem is that most people don’t know where to look.

NeedyMeds has been connecting people to affordable healthcare resources for over two decades. We’ve compiled resources for thousands of medications, including Humira, to help patients save money. In this article, we’ll cover three key programs to help reduce the cost of Humira, for both insured and uninsured patients.

Why is humira so expensive?

Humira is expensive because it’s a biologic drug. Biologics are made from living cells, making them complex and expensive to manufacture. Add to that AbbVie’s patent protections and legal strategies to delay biosimilar competition, and the result is one of the most expensive drugs on the market.

Fortunately, with the introduction of biosimilars like Amjevita in 2023, some patients may see reduced costs over time. But until biosimilars are more widely adopted, assistance programs remain the best way to save.

Have insurance? Sign up for the humira copay card.

If you have commercial insurance, the Humira Complete Savings Card can significantly lower your out-of-pocket costs. This program reduces copays to as little as $5 per month for eligible patients.

If your pharmacy doesn’t accept the card, you can submit a rebate claim, which may reduce the cost to $0 per month.

you may be eligible for medicare part d extra help.

The Medicare Part D Extra Help program, also called the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), assists Medicare patients with limited income by covering prescription drug costs. The program reduces premiums, deductibles, and copayments for Humira and other drugs.

If you qualify, you could pay as little as $11.20 for brand-name medications. Apply online at Medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-772-1213.

Apply to the Humira patient assistance program.

If you don’t qualify for the LIS, you can apply to the AbbVie Patient Access Support Program for Humira. This program is open to Medicare patients as well as uninsured or underinsured patients. Qualified patients will receive Humira for free if eligible.

You can choose to complete the application either by online or printing out the application. Whatever the case, you must get your healthcare provider involved. For a successful application, you must:

  • Provide insurance information and income documents.
  • Fill out, sign and date applicable sections. This is important — any missing information will result in a denial.
  • If printing the application, you or your provider must fax it to the listed address on the form.

For more information, read about the application process on our website or contact the program at 800-222-6885. We HIGHLY recommend you contact the program if you have any questions.

Additional Tips

Shop around for Medicare plans. If you’re having difficulty affording your medications under your current plan, it might be time to explore other options. Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. For guidance on selecting a plan, contact your state’s SHIP/SHINE program. These programs offer free, unbiased counseling to help you navigate Medicare options and identify cost-saving opportunities.

Find your state’s medication assistance program. Many states offer programs to help eligible residents afford their medications, known as State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs). These programs often supplement Medicare Part D, reducing out-of-pocket costs, or provide primary coverage for those without insurance.

Sign up for funding from The PAN Foundation. They often have funding for various medications, including Humira. Funds operate on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning that you should apply for funding as soon as one opens. Sign up for their FundFinder service to get notified when a fund is available.
