Last Updated on March 12, 2025

Struggling with the cost of Linzess? You’re not alone. Many people rely on this medication to manage irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) or chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC)–but the high price can be a major burden. The good news is that there are ways to lower your costs, no matter your financial situation.

At NeedyMeds, we connect people with savings programs for thousands of medications, including Linzess. Whether you have commercial insurance, Medicare, or no insurance at all, there may be an option to help you afford your prescription.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best ways to save, including free Linzess coupons, Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs), and other resources.

What Is Linzess and Why Is It So Expensive?

Linzess (linaclotide) is a prescription drug that helps relieve constipation and abdominal discomfort by increasing fluid in the intestines, making bowel movements easier. It is a brand-name medication with no generic alternatives, which contributes to its high cost.

Linzess is still under patent protection, meaning no lower-cost generic versions are currently available. These patents won’t expire until the early 2030s, but settlements with generic manufacturers have allowed for earlier generic releases.

Teva Pharmaceuticals has secured a license to market generic versions of the 145 mcg and 290 mcg strengths in the U.S. beginning March 31, 2029. Sandoz Inc. has a similar agreement allowing them to launch their generic versions of the same dosages starting February 5, 2030. The 72 mcg strength is not included in these agreements, meaning its generic availability may take longer.

Until then, patients must rely on other assistance options if they’re having trouble with the price of Linzess.

Commercially Insured? Sign Up for the Linzess Savings Program

If you have private health insurance, you might qualify for the Linzess Savings Program. Eligible commercially insured patients may pay as little as $30 per prescription for up to 12 fills a year.

To sign up, visit the Linzess website, fill out a short form, and download your savings card. Show the card at the pharmacy each time you pick up your prescription.

Unfortunately the free Linzess coupon is only available for those with commercial insurance, but other programs are out there to help with the cost.

On Medicare? Apply for the Extra Help Program

If Linzess is expensive on your medicare plan, the Medicare Part D Extra Help Program may be able to help. This is a federal program that helps people with limited income pay for prescriptions, premiums, deductibles, and copays.

The program could save you up to $5,000 per year on medication costs, with prescriptions . If approved, you may have lower copays and possibly even free coverage for your Part D premium.

To apply, visit SSA.gov or call 1-800-772-1213. The application asks about your income and savings to see if you qualify. Even if you’re unsure, some people still get help even if their income is a little too high.

Uninsured? You May Qualify for myAbbvie Assist

Uninsured patients may be able to get Linzess at no cost through myAbbVie Assist, a PAP offered by AbbVie. This program helps eligible patients who cannot afford their medication by providing it completely free of charge.

Unlike many other manufacturer programs, myAbbVie Assist is open to people on certain medicare plans who meet income requirements.

For a successful application, you will need to:

  • Fill out an application with your personal and financial information.
  • Provide proof of income, such as a tax return or Social Security benefits statement.
  • Ask your doctor to complete part of the form to confirm your need for Linzess.

Once approved, you can receive free Linzess for a full year, and you may reapply if you still qualify. NeedyMeds gives you everything you need to know about a PAP.

Additional Resources & Tips

  • Try non-profit funding organizations, such as the PAN Foundation and HealthWell Foundation. Both carry Linzess in some capacity, but the catch is that funds are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. In order to secure funding, patients must sign up for funds as soon as they become available.
  • Check state programs for medication assistance. Many states help Medicare Part D patients who can’t afford their prescriptions through State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs). Click here to find a program in your state.
  • Review your Medicare plan if you’re still struggling with costs. Many Medicare beneficiaries aren’t on the best plan for their needs. Get in touch with your local State Health Assistance Plan (SHIP) office. They will help you navigate your current plan and find a new one during open enrollment.
  • Never pay monthly fees for cheaper medications. Some companies charge around $70–$80 per month, claiming they can get you discounted medications. These services often charge for resources you can access for free on NeedyMeds and may not even secure your medication. If you need help with a PAP application, explore these resources instead.
