Resources for Praluent: What You Need To Know

Last Updated on January 30, 2025

High cholesterol causes over 4.4 million deaths each year, making medications like Praluent essential for heart health. However, the cost of Praluent can be a significant barrier, especially for uninsured patients or those with high copays.

At NeedyMeds, we connect patients with financial assistance programs that can help reduce the cost of Praluent and other prescription medications. Since Praluent is one of the most frequently asked-about drugs, we’ve put together this guide to help you explore Praluent savings options, whether you have private insurance, Medicare, or no coverage at all.

What is Praluent?

Praluent (alirocumab) is a prescription medication used to lower high LDL cholesterol, commonly known as “bad” cholesterol. It belongs to a class of drugs called PCSK9 inhibitors, which help the liver remove excess cholesterol from the blood, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The manufacturer of Praluent, Regeneron, holds patents that won’t expire at least until 2036. This means that a cheaper generic won’t be available for quite some time.

Fortunately, Regeneron offers financial assistance for Praluent, no matter their financial situation.

Here’s How Insured Patients Can Save On Praluent

The MyPraluent Copay Card lowers out-of-pocket cost to as little as $50 per prescription. This program is available for eligible patients with private insurance and can save them up to $3,500 a year.

This coupon also offers reimbursement to patients if they paid for a prescription before signing up for benefits, subject to the terms and conditions of the program.

Unfortunately, this offer is not available to patients on medicare, but there are still programs that can help.

Medicare Patients Are Still Eligible For Savings

Coverage for Praluent on medicare can vary depending on your plan. We highly encourage medicare patients to apply for the Medicare Part D Extra Help Program. If eligible, they may only pay $11.20 per prescription.

If the application is denied, don’t give up hope yet. For patients still struggling to pay for medications, we usually recommend that they shop around for a better plan. Their local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) office can assist them with their current plan or help shop around for a new one during open enrollment.

Uninsured Patients Can Get Praluent For Free

We usually recommend The HealthWell Foundation for eligible patients with no insurance. HealthWell is a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance for eligible patients who need help covering medication costs.

Since HealthWell funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, it’s important to apply as soon as funding becomes available. We recommend signing up for Real-Time Fund Alerts to receive updates when new assistance opportunities open.
