Bruins Fan Raises Awareness to #BumpOutCancer

Last summer, we wrote about the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of the ALS Association. This year, a young Bruins fan’s viral video has launched a new awareness campaign. Liam Fitzgerald, 8 years old, was seen fist-bumping Boston Bruins players during their warm-up last November, and captured the hearts of hockey fans around the nation. In 2011, Liam “kicked cancer’s butt,” and is now working on raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with his own “Fist Bump Challenge.” Less bracing than a bucket of ice water, Liam’s campaign asks people to post pictures or videos of themselves fist bumping each other on social media and donating $5—$1 for each finger and thumb—and then nominating five more people to participate in the challenge.

Leukemia is a cancer that affects blood and bone marrow and develops when blood cells produced in the bone marrow grow out of control. It’s estimated that over 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with leukemia every year and 24,000 die from the disease annually.

NeedyMeds in 2014

We’re wrapping up 2014 here at NeedyMeds, and it’s been a big year for us. We have kept true to our original mission to provide information on programs that help people who can’t afford medications and healthcare costs, and have expanded in the interest of offering more direct assistance to those in need.

The year started with a redesign of our website. Later that January, we launched a unique crowdfunding platform called HEALfundr. Using HEALfundr, people can raise funds for verified medical expenses that will be paid directly with the crowd-raised funds. HEALfundr is the only crowdfunding platform to verify campaigns and pay bills directly, giving confidence to donors that they will not be victimized by fraud and relieving the stress of handling incoming and outgoing funds for those in need.

This past May we released a new web-based tutorial for those looking to learn how to find help for patients facing problems affording their medicine or other healthcare costs called Patient

Giving Tuesday 2014

NeedyMeds is proud to be participating in #GivingTuesday again this year. #GivingTuesday is a first of its kind effort to transform how people participate in the giving season. Similar to how Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday have become synonymous with holiday shopping, #GivingTuesday aims to make the Tuesday after Thanksgiving a National Day of Giving. In 2012 over 2,500 organizations partnered with #GivingTuesday and raised over $10 Million in online donations in a single day, and last year over 10,000 organizations participated raising more than $19 Million.

History of GivingTuesday

New York’s 92nd Street Y was the catalyst and incubator for #GivingTuesday, bringing the expertise of 139 years of community-management to the project and providing #GivingTuesday a home. The United Nations Foundation joined as partners, bringing their strategic and communications clout to the project. An amazing team of influencers then offered their ideas, contacts and wisdom to help shape and improve the concept. A powerful list of corporations and non-profits agreed to be founding partners,

What Does StuffSeniorsNeed.com do?

Today’s blog post is a guest post from Tony at StuffSeniorsNeed.com, a great site dedicated to helping the elderly along with their caregivers.

So “What does StuffSeniorsNeed.com do?”

The best way to tell that is through my personal story, and while it is a long story I will condense it to be brief and to answer the question above.  It involves my mother’s physical decline, far earlier than I ever would have expected, and the heart attack she took at age 68.

This heart attack, which she did survive, put me in the role of being a very unprepared caregiver.  All of a sudden I needed to become her power of attorney, health care proxy, find all of her financial information to apply for the 5-year look back period for Medicaid, learn how to check out a nursing home to make sure Mom was getting the best care possible, and 100’s of other things that I never foresaw I would have to do this early in life.

Ten years from now, maybe, but not now.

That’s the first thing I do for the readers of my blog as well as for the attendees to the seminars where I speak. Warn them that they need to be prepared now for their

HEALfundr: The Power to HEAL

Even with recent legislation making health care more accessible, Americans still need help paying for medical expenses. Despite having insurance coverage, 10 million Americans faced bills they were unable to pay in 2013.

When options run low and eligibility requirements for assistance can be restrictive, many are turning to online crowdfunding.

Remaining popular for creative works, crowdfunding is a tool to collect donations using the Internet towards a larger single goal. In 2012, up to 30% of all crowdfunding campaigns were for social or medically related causes. The use of social media has connected those in need with those in their own personal networks and beyond that are able to help.

Earlier this year, NeedyMeds launched HEALfundr to take what we saw as the next logical step in medical crowdfunding. Our unique vision is one of secure, verified campaigns that take the hassle and stress of coordinating between incoming donations and outgoing bills as well granting donors the confidence their contribution is going to an essential need.

The only eligibility requirements of HEALfundr are that you have legitimate medical expenses
